Project Overview

Tractor in Space by Darrell W. Allen is a gleefully imaginative picture book that asks one of the best questions in children’s literature: what if a farmer went to space? When the dedicated protagonist and his tractor T-Rex are recruited for a special mission to grow crops on a distant planet, the story delivers both the comedic delight of that premise and a genuine appreciation for the essential work farmers do. Allen grounds the fantasy in real agricultural values — responsibility, persistence, and the understanding that feeding communities matters everywhere.

The illustration challenge was the sheer visual scope of the book: farm fields, rocket launches, alien planets, and the distinctive personality of T-Rex the tractor all needed to feel consistent and coherent across wildly different environments, from an earthbound afternoon to an extraterrestrial cornfield.

Role

The illustration challenge was making the transition from an ordinary farm to an alien planet feel like a genuine leap while keeping the tractor itself, and the sense of down-to-earth purpose it represents, recognisable throughout. The story’s blend of science fiction and farming needed the artwork to sell both halves equally.

Full illustration across the book covered character design for the driver and Rex the tractor, launch sequence and space travel illustration, alien planet environment design, and print-ready file preparation for Mascot Books.
