Project Overview

Shy Froggie – The Big Adventure by Timothy Brower and Gabriella Brower is a tender picture book about the particular courage it takes for a shy child to step beyond what feels safe and familiar. Froggie is content on his own side of the pond — it’s known, it’s comfortable, it’s his. But with the gentle encouragement of his mother, he ventures out, and what he finds transforms him: new friends, new colours, new experiences that fill his heart in ways his small safe corner never could. The Browers write with a gentleness that never rushes Froggie’s journey or dismisses his shyness as something to simply get over.

The illustration challenge was making the world beyond the pond genuinely inviting and beautiful — it needed to look worth the leap, so that readers felt Froggie’s reward as fully as his initial anxiety.

Role

The illustration challenge was making the world beyond the pond genuinely inviting and beautiful. It needed to look worth the leap, so readers felt Froggie’s reward as fully as his initial anxiety, with the far shore reading as visibly, irresistibly more alive than the safety he already knew.

Full illustration across the book covered character design for Froggie, his mother, and new pond community friends, contrasting pond environments with distinct visual personalities, nature and animal world design, and print-ready file preparation.

Character Design

Before a single page is illustrated, I develop the main characters in full — defining their proportions, expressions, and personality. This is the foundation that keeps your characters recognizable and consistent across every scene, every lighting condition, and every emotional moment in the project.

Process

Every project follows this same structured path, so you always know where we are and what comes next. You review and approve at the sketch stage and the line art stage — nothing moves to color until you’re happy. By the time the final spread is rendered, there are no surprises.
