Football Freddie & Fumble the Dog: Gameday in Canton is, in many ways, the most historically significant installment in the series — because Canton, Ohio is where professional football began. Freddie and Fumble explore the city with the reverence it deserves: visiting the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the First Ladies National Historic Site, and the many other landmarks that make Canton a city worth knowing. Co-authored with Susan Tose Spencer, the book blends football legend with genuine American history in a way that makes both feel accessible and exciting for young readers.

The illustration challenge was rendering the Hall of Fame and its exhibits with enough accuracy to satisfy football fans while keeping the visual energy lively and warm enough for children who are encountering the sport’s history for the first time.

Role

Marnie’s Canton book carries more historical weight than any other in the series — because Canton is where professional football actually began. The illustration challenge wasn’t just making a city feel warm and inviting for young readers; it was rendering the Hall of Fame and its exhibits with enough visual accuracy to satisfy real football fans while keeping the energy lively enough for children encountering the sport’s history for the first time.

From maintaining consistency across Freddie, Fumble, and the full series cast through to print-ready files, I worked across the complete book illustration, making sure each landmark spread felt both authentic to the location and true to the playful spirit of the series.

Character Design

Before a single page is illustrated, I develop the main characters in full — defining their proportions, expressions, and personality. This is the foundation that keeps your characters recognizable and consistent across every scene, every lighting condition, and every emotional moment in the project.

Process

Every project follows this same structured path, so you always know where we are and what comes next. You review and approve at the sketch stage and the line art stage — nothing moves to color until you’re happy. By the time the final spread is rendered, there are no surprises.
