Stanley & Walker: Canine Cultural Diversity Champs
Chapter Picture Book · Ages 6–8 · Diversity / Inclusion / Cultural Awareness / SEL
Stanley and Walker guide young readers through ten chapters of real-world difference — and show that what makes us unlike each other is exactly what brings us closer together.

Project Overview
Stanley & Walker: Canine Cultural Diversity Champs by Emily I. Hoffman and Ellen Sue Stern is the first book in a multi-volume empowerment series, and it tackles one of childhood’s most important subjects — learning to see difference not as a barrier but as a gift. Across ten emotionally rich chapters, the lovable dog duo Stanley and Walker lead young readers through encounters with skin color, diverse family structures, different learning styles, religious practices, socio-economic differences, and cross-cultural experiences. Each chapter is self-contained but builds toward the same cumulative message: that a more inclusive world is a stronger one.
The illustration challenge was designing a cast of anthropomorphic dog characters diverse enough in appearance, personality, and expression to represent the full range of human experiences the story addresses — each character needed to feel specific and warm rather than symbolic, carrying the weight of real diversity through animal form.
