Project Overview

The Adventures of Cat and Jude by Marie Reigns is a playful, energetic picture book about the particular magic of cousin relationships and the adventures that happen when two curious children are left alone with their imaginations. Cat and Jude are just a year apart, which makes them natural collaborators — equal partners in the important mission of reaching the mysterious present boxes at the top of the cupboard. Marie Reigns captures the logic and determination of young children with affectionate accuracy, making Cat and Jude’s plan feel completely sensible from where they’re standing.

The illustration challenge was conveying the scale of the nursery from a toddler’s perspective — cupboards that are easily reached by adults needed to feel genuinely monumental, making the children’s mission feel appropriately epic and their eventual triumph completely satisfying.

Full illustration across the book covered character design for Cataleya and Jude-Marie, child’s-eye-view scale and perspective across the nursery environment, visual storytelling of problem-solving and collaborative play, and print-ready file preparation.
