Project Overview

What’s College About Anyway? by Betty Patterson introduces the concept of higher education to young children through the natural setting of a curious classroom. When Miss Sims’ students begin asking questions about college — what it is, why people go, what happens there — the story opens up into a gentle, inspiring exploration of possibility, goal-setting, and the idea that big futures begin with small steps taken early. Betty Patterson writes with the understanding that children this age are already forming ideas about what their futures look like, and that the presence or absence of college in those imaginings can start very early indeed.

The illustration challenge was making a college campus feel genuinely exciting and aspirational to a four-year-old — not intimidating or distant, but a place of adventure and growth that felt like a natural extension of the curiosity they already have in Miss Sims’ classroom.

Role

Full book illustration covered classroom and college campus environment illustration, and an aspirational visual tone that stays warm and accessible for young readers, along with print-ready file preparation.

The core challenge was making a college campus feel genuinely exciting rather than intimidating or distant to a four-year-old, so it read as a natural extension of the curiosity already alive in Miss Sims’ classroom, a place of adventure and growth rather than something far off and abstract.
