Project Overview
Geoff’s New View by Jennie Cavanagh is a quiet, important picture book about what happens when a child finally finds the environment that suits him. Geoff has felt out of place in his classroom — unsure, uncomfortable, not quite belonging — until he is introduced to the sensory room, a space designed to support his unique needs. There, something shifts. Geoff finds comfort, joy, and the confidence to engage with school on his own terms. Jennie Cavanagh writes with a gentleness that respects both Geoff’s experience and the adults around him, avoiding blame while celebrating the power of appropriate support.
The illustration challenge was making the sensory room feel genuinely transformative on the page — it needed to look visually different from the rest of the school, with a warmth, softness, and sense of safety that made Geoff’s relief and joy completely legible the moment he entered it.
