Project Overview
A Prince After All by Heather Crick is a tender picture book about the courage it takes to share a secret and the kind of friendship that makes that courage possible. Charlie and Sarah are inseparable — school, play, all of it together — but Sarah has been carrying something she hasn’t found the words for yet. When she finally does, Charlie’s response is not what either of them might have predicted, and that response changes everything in the most beautiful way. Heather Crick writes with a delicacy that lets the story carry its meaning without spelling it out, trusting readers to feel the weight of what honesty and acceptance look like in a real friendship.
The illustration challenge was making the emotional shift in the story visible in the characters’ faces and body language — the moment Sarah shares her secret and the moment Charlie responds both needed to land with full emotional clarity on the page, wordlessly communicating what the text only approaches gently.
