Barrington and the Police Academy
by Turner J. Barran
Picture Book · Ages 4–8 · Law Enforcement / Anthropomorphic / Perseverance / Community Service
Barrington the bear has always dreamed of becoming a Deputy Sheriff — and the Louisiana P.O.S.T. Academy is where that dream begins to get real.

Project Overview
Barrington and the Police Academy by Turner J. Barran follows Barrington, a determined bear, from his first day at the Louisiana P.O.S.T. Academy through the physical drills, classroom challenges, and moments of doubt that mark the journey toward becoming a Deputy Sheriff. Turner J. Barran writes with genuine respect for the work of law enforcement while keeping the story grounded in the universal experience of working hard toward a dream. Barrington’s character — his courage, his discipline, his community — is what the story is really about, with the police academy as the setting that tests and reveals it.
The illustration challenge was giving an anthropomorphic bear protagonist the full emotional range and physical presence needed to carry a story about serious aspiration — Barrington needed to feel genuinely determined and genuinely challenged, making his eventual success feel earned rather than inevitable.
