Project Overview

Lou the Lieutenant by Catherine Bishop follows Lou from childhood through the pivotal moment he meets Belleau, his loyal K-9 companion, and eventually to achieving his dream of becoming a lieutenant in the town of Doxaloo. The story is built around the bond between a person and their working dog — a partnership founded on trust, teamwork, and a shared sense of purpose. Catherine Bishop writes with warmth and conviction, making Lou’s journey feel both aspirational and deeply human.

The illustration challenge was capturing the evolution of that bond across time — Lou as a child, Lou as a young man, Lou as a lieutenant — while keeping Belleau’s loyalty and personality consistent and emotionally present in every scene, across every stage of their shared life.

Role

Catherine’s story has an unusual structural challenge: Lou had to age visibly across the book while Belleau had to remain recognizably the same dog across every stage of that life. The illustration couldn’t just tell a single moment — it had to carry a whole timeline, with each spread communicating exactly where Lou is in that journey, without ever losing the continuity of the bond between them.

From developing Lou’s character sheet and designing Belleau from the manuscript’s descriptions through to print-ready files, I worked across the full 38-page illustration — making sure every spread kept the emotional thread of their partnership visible, whether Lou is a boy dreaming or a lieutenant serving.

The meeting spread — the moment that sets everything in motion. The challenge was making this feel like a genuinely significant encounter without overselling it; the emotional weight had to come from the characters, not the staging.

The training spread — partnership being built in real time. This required showing both characters learning together, so the bond reads as earned rather than given.

The swearing-in spread — the payoff of everything that came before. Two characters who started as strangers in a park, now standing together as partners with a shared purpose.

The patrol spread — Lou and Belleau at work, doing exactly what they trained for. The neighborhood details in this spread had to feel warm and specific, not generic.

Character Design

Before a single page is illustrated, I develop the main characters in full — defining their proportions, expressions, and personality. This is the foundation that keeps your characters recognizable and consistent across every scene, every lighting condition, and every emotional moment in the project.

Process

Every project follows this same structured path, so you always know where we are and what comes next. You review and approve at the sketch stage and the line art stage — nothing moves to color until you’re happy. By the time the final spread is rendered, there are no surprises.
